Pole x Charmaine
Who is She?
Charmaine Lee Si Min
Immersed in the movements of ballet and gymnastics since the age of 7, Charmaine has nurtured her skills in the Performing Arts over the years, participating in Drama, Choir, Concert Band and Brazilian Percussion performances. She then moved on to harness her martial arts skills in Taekwondo, garnering a Black Belt.

It was not until her first pole dance trial in 2018 that her passion for dance was reignited. She was mesmerised by the myriad of tricks and genres that could be blended with a vertical metal bar. Her first 2 years of pole training was undertaken at Physipole Studios Carlton in Melbourne (VIC, AU) before she joined SLAP Dance Studio (SG) in 2020. After 1.5 years of poling, she joined the Instructor Team at SLAP Dance Studio, teaching several apparatus including pole, chair, floor work, and hoop. And today, she is a freelance instructor offering classes in pole tricks and dance, chair dance, floor dance, aerial hoop, and nutritional advice.

Charmaine was first runner-up at Physipole Studios Carlton’s Ignite Heats 2019 and performed in their end of year Showcase: “High School Reunion”. She also guest performed a few years later at Physipole Carlton's Ignite Heats in 2022. This only spurred the continuation of her pole journey and her passion to share the joys of pole with those around her.

""
I don't have the best foot arches, nor the best flexibility.
I do not have what others would call 'a dancer's body'.
But I do my best by studying the finer details of each move, whilst ensuring that I enjoy the process to reach my goal.

Knowledge is Power
As a low-risk taker, I have always prioritised understanding the ins and outs before making a decision. And in terms of fitness and nutrition, that will be "safety first".

This is especially so in high risk sports/performance arts like Pole, Aerial and Floorwork. Activities like these could induce undesired impairments when participating in them without the right muscle engagement knowledge. With that, my hope is to educate individuals on their own body as they embark on their physical journey.

Nutrition is more than just the consumption of food as fuel for the body. Through the years, I have observed the gaps in understanding how food directly affects performance, even in day-to-day activities. I have always desired to be an educator and so with these experiences, I believe I could share the knowledge of personal health through my services. My aim is to empower each individual with a tailored plan to best achieve their personal goals.

Enjoy The Process
More often than not, we find ourselves aiming to attain the next stage of progress as soon as possible. I, too, seek out quick progression journeys. However sometimes we just need to slow ourselves down so as to celebrate our achievements on this voyage. Every individual's physical and mental progression develops at very different paces. Don't beat yourself up for what you're unable to achieve today, for it might just 'click' for you tomorrow.
One story I always share with my friends and students in hopes that it could help them relate better to setbacks:
Back in those days when I was still a student in Level 5 (out of 12), it was the first time in my 1st year of pole journey that I could not attain a trick on the first attempt. I was the only one in class that could not get it, I was devastated. I felt like a catastrophic failure – because growing up in an Asian household meant that failures weren't tolerated. It was in week 1 that I experienced this defeat, and it was killing me internally all the way until week 7 when it finally 'clicked' for my body. Phew, the relief. But looking back, now I understand what my then Instructor meant when she said this phrase to us.
"Enjoy the process. We all progress at different rates, so do not compare yourself to others. You will get it one day."
~ Narelle Tobin (Physipole Studios, Carlton)
I hope this story would inspire you to keep going, trust the process, and enjoy your own personal journey.
